Very difficult to make, this vase begins it life as tiny canes of glass which have a center of white and outside of clear glass. They are fused together and then blown, turning while blowing creates the spiral design. A labor intensive process. This is a classic Venetian vase in look and in creation. Stands about 6.5 inches tall.

Making FiligranaMaking FiligranaFiligrana is a tecnhique very complicated and resulted in very refines objects. It originated in the 6th Century and it accomplished by incorporating previously made canes with a color which are heated (Step 2) and attached to the bit of glass (shown in Step 1) which has been taken from the furnace and worked, smooth and elongated.

Carefully rolling this piece of glass over the prepared canes (Step 3) picks up the color which is then fused (Step 4) and (Step 5) ends cut. By heating this piece in the fire to a red hot stage (but not too hot to make the canes flow) the blower can then complete the piece. Turning, sculpting and continued heating and working produce these complicated pieces.
